Publisher: Unicorn Books (www.pustakmahal.com)Doctors have beentelling us that fat is a killer. Eatless cholesterol, saturated fat andsalt; eat more fibre rich foods weare told. If we do not, we are doomedto the West’s greatest killer - heartdisease, if not that, then stroke. Ahigh cholesterol level in the bloodis also related to an increasedincidence of gallstones. The most common life-threateningdisease, which seems to be in ourcontrol, is the Heart Disease; Cancerand AIDS being out of bounds. Thereare many diseases that affect theheart, but the one that the ‘healthyeating’ strategies seek to preventis Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) orIschaemic Heart Disease (IHD). CHDis a condition where the coronaryarteries that supply blood to nourishthe heart muscle are narrowed by abuild-up of material on their wallsto such an extent thatthey become blocked. This cuts offthe blood supply to part of the heartmuscle, and we have a heart attack. The narrowing also encourages theclotting of blood and, inconsequence, it is possible for aclot to cause a heart attack. The clot may travel andif it reaches the brain and causes ablockage, it causes a stroke. Thematerial generally found in thebuild-up is cholesterol and the‘healthy eating’ advice given topeople to reduce the incidence ofCHD and stroke is aimed simply atreducing the levels of cholesterolin the blood.High cholesterol in itself is not adisease, but a side-effect of anunhealthy lifestyle. The incidenceof cholesterol related problems areon the increase, and diet alone cannot be blamed for it; lack ofexercise, choice of beverages, cigarette smoking, undisciplined workand social life also play asignificant role in the cholesterolproduction in our body. The way tobalance the cholesterol in the body,is to live like our fore-fathers forthey walked a lot, were close tonature, ate the seasonal fruits andvegetables and lived a disciplinedlife.Let us understand this whole thingsystematically, so that we are ableto look after ourselves better.Any imbalance in natureand our immediate environment affectsus. Certain effects are obvious, likedropping of body resistance duringchange of climate and therebycatching infections like influenza. But then there are other subtlerenvironmental changes like a changein the job, or family environment(marriage, childbirth, death), whichalso affect our bodies (internally)and since any action results in areaction, so our body also reacts. So without our knowledge, over yearsof absorption from our surroundings,we accumulate a lot of emotional andphysiological toxins, whichultimately manifest as disease.Production of cholesterol (amongother things) is also one of ourbody’s reactions towards stress. Bysimply reducing its intake throughthe diet and taking medicines toremove it, is again treating theproblem symptomatically. This is nota permanent solution. The solutionwould be to understand the genesisof the problem, so that when youtreat it, it does not recur. The author has devised a 15-day detox programme, which iffollowed regularly, yields positiveresults in six to eight weeks. Itinvolves a regular intake ofcholesterol-busting foods coupledwith a healthy disciplined lifestyleregime. This simple programme breaksdown the existing cholesteroldeposits in the body, lowers the bloodcholesterol levels and controls thefurther production of cholesterol bythe body, bringing about a drasticupliftment in the physical and mentalwell-being of the person who makes ahabit of it.
