Ever had your palm read or your future told? We all wonder about our love life and what will become of it. Is he or she already in our lives? Will I let him/her go? When will I meet him/her? Nicholas Sparks’s novel The Notebook, is a heartwarming novel that captures its readers through smiles and tears leaving them believing in true love and soulmates once again. In the introduction, the main character we learn is an elderly man in a home. Everyday this man goes to an elderly woman’s room who has lost her memory and reads her a story. “There is always a moment right before I begin to read the story when my mind churns, and I wonder, Will it happen today? I don’t know, for I never know beforehand, and deep down it really doesn’t matter. It’s the possibility taht keeps me going, not the guarantee, a sort of wager on my part. And though you may call me a dreamer or fool or any other thing, I believe that anything is possible…So once again, just as I do every day, I begin to read the notebook aloud, so that she can hear it, in the hope that the miracle that has come to dominate my life will once again prevail” (5). After reading that, if you are into romantic stories, you are immediately wondering what could he possibly be wanting to relive everyday of his life? You begin to imagine what kind of love story it is. Is it a happy ending or sad one? Is he a character? What about her? After a capturing introduction, Noah Calhoun begins telling his story that began in 1932 in North Carolina at the Neuse River Festival where he found his eyes on a girl he had never seen before. It was “an ordinary beginning, something that would have been forgotten had it been anyone but her. But as he shook her hand and met those striking emerald eyes, he knew before he’d taken his next breath that she was he one he could spend the rest of his life looking for but never find again. She seemed that good, that perfect, while a summer wind blew through the trees” (13). They share the dreamy relationship that readers hope for, but being from diffeent classes, family and money tears them apart. Allie leaves NC and becomes engaged to a wealthy lawyer however, she gave her heart away to a boy long before him and when she comes back to North Carolina a spark ignites as if they never were apart. They are destined to be together. Sparks is a true romantic that shares an emotional roller coaster of love lost and found, once you begin you will feel like you’ve shared the emotions of Allie and Noah both in the past and the present. It is an amazing tale of love but be sure to have a box of tissues with lotion nearby.
