“The Choice” by Nicholas Sparks is broken into two parts. It is a great example of a romance novel that involves a love triangle between Gabby, Kevin, and Travis. Kevin is a veterinarian who is engaged to Gabby, and Travis is their handsome neighbor. The love triangle begins when Kevin has to go on a business trip. Gabby and Kevin begin spending time together and enjoying eachother’s company. Throughout Part 1 of the novel Gabby goes back and forth between the two men. It is not until the second part of the book that the reader becomes aware of who she chooses. Part 2 opens in a hospital and the reader finds out who Gabby chose to be with. Gabby is faced with a choice that is a matter of life and death. She struggles with the decision but is eventually able to come to a decision of what she should do.I found “The Choice” to be similar to some of Sparks’ other books, in particular “The Notebook”. “The Notebook” is the first book I read by Sparks, and I decided to read it because I loved the movie and figured it would be a good choice. This book also includes a love triangle. Ally falls into summer love with Noah, who Ally’s family does not like because he is not as wealthy as them. The summer ends, Ally goes away to school in New York, and Noah joins the army as their love is put on hold. Ally meets someone else and gets engaged. This book related closely to “The Choice” in the way that both are romance novels involving a love triange.A friend recommended this book to me and I was not able to put it down. The characters were very well developed and the reader was able to feel as if they knew the characters. Sparks uses a good tactic of giving few details and tells certain ideas that make the reader think they know what is going on or what is going to happen, but then something totally different happened and the reader is left in a surprised state. While reading I was unable to put the book down because I kept wanted to know what was going to happen next. The story is romantic, shocking, sad, and suspenseful all at the same time. If you want to read a book that will keep you guessing but also includes all of the classic love story elements, “The Choice” by Nicholas Sparks is a great read.
