March is Small Press Month
| news item by BLNicholas , Eclectic book explorer, writer, teacher |
Written by Brenda Nicholas
This month marks the 25th anniversary of PMA, the Independent Book Publishers Association. This organization represents 4,200 small press publishers, and supports marketing of small press titles.
Be sure to browse around for small press titles when you’re hunting for your next great read. Just because a small press publishes a book does not mean it is not mighty. There are literary giants out there whom you have not yet heard of but are every bit (or perhaps more) worthy of your attention.
If you don’t believe me, listen to Author Walter Mosley, who says:
"The life’s blood of contemporary and modern literature is in the custodianship of so-called small publishers. Without them, there is no future for literature."
Not only does PMA do great things for great authors and publishers, they are donating 5,000 to the New Orleans Public Library system, to assist with the rebuilding of New Orleans libraries after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

It seemed like a good idea: a sexed-up, fictionalized autobiography of Laura Bush. For eight years the First Lady has been the "silent partner" in a White House that can boast that it changed the cou...
The Ha-Ha
, by Dave King
This is Dave King's debut fictional novel, and it is superb. It is centered around Howie, a Vietnam Vet. He became disabled in the war and has been trying to rebuild his life ever since. His disabi...
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
, by J. K. Rowling
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the novel that took this series to a whole new level. Not only is it more complicated, dramatic, and suspenseful than the first three, but it is also the found...
Out Stealing Horses
, by Per Petterson
This is a quiet book, with a subtle, quiet impact. Thankfully, such low-decibel works are still receiving attention in the world of smash-'em-ups and steamy scandal, where much of our entertainment l...
