I didn't realize that I fell into a specific "reader" category, but apparently I might be considered a reader that hasn't been reached yet??? Does that even make sense? I think I am pretty reachable when it comes to books; just look at my bookshelves.
The above is based on publishing companies trying to figure out why certain paperbacks have had such tremendous success over the last few years. I have read all but two, and enjoyed them all. They are:
Sue Monk Kidd's "The Secret Life of Bees," or Khaled Hosseini's "The Kite Runner." Kim Edwards' "The Memory Keeper's Daughter." Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love." Greg Mortenson's and David Oliver Relin's "Three Cups of Tea."
Some pretty recognizable titles, huh?
The publishing company (Penguin) says that the only think they have in common, and I quote "They (Penguin) saw these books as brand new books, reaching a customer that had not been reached." Now does that mean that because I loved these books, I was a customer who hasn't been reached yet? IF so, there are some book stores out there that owe me a major refund....
Or is it just awesome marketing. Penguin publishers has been taking hardcover books that sell pretty well and making a huge selling campaign for them when they are released as paperbacks. Then these books sell like hotcakes! I don't know about you, but I read so many books a week that I couldn't possibly afford to buy in hardcover, and hauling them around can make you very tired.
So Penguin, will set up these paperbacks as if they are new releases and set up book tours, signings, special placement in the stores, etc. Maybe that explains the awesome sales figures, or, maybe they were all just well written good books.....I hate to think Oprah had anything to do with it....
So if you are an inspiring author, (which I am not), and you have an awesome manuscript laying around, (which I do not), then send it off to Penguin....and good luck on your paperback tour!
