Book Claims to Reveal the Secrets of the “Symbolic One”
| news item by BLNicholas , Eclectic book explorer, writer, teacher |
The man formerly and currently known as Prince will reveal his mystique in a glossy “photographic essay” to be published in the fall by Atria Books. The book, “21 Nights,” is titled after his successful 21 consecutive sold-out concerts in London during 2007.
I’ll admit that I’m a Prince fan and also that I know nothing about the man outside of his character in his movie “Purple Rain,” his decision to change his name to a symbol, and that he was once (still is?) married to a ballet dancer who appeared with him on stage for his 1998 New Power Soul Festival at Madison Square Garden. His energy on stage was thrilling to witness, although he opted for a mosaic tour of his songs that frustrated me to no end. As soon as I found myself completely surrendered, singing (scary, trust me), and dancing out of my seat to “Take Me With U,” he shot into the next song, half way through. He did this with every song, and it left me feeling, well, dissatisfied.
Sorry, I digress from the bookish news. The book, according to MSN news, will foray—to some degree—his mysterious life and lyrics. I’ll have to pick this book up, if for no other reason than to find out if it’s even possible that a photographic essay will reveal the man rather than the myth of the “Symbolic One.”
For any Prince fans curious about his set list at that 1998 concert I caught, why, here it is:
Push It Up
Jam Of The Year
Talkin' Loud And Sayin' Nothing
Let's Work
Delirious
Purple Rain
Little Red Corvette
I Would Die 4 U
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
The Ride
The Christ
The One
Do Me, Baby
If I Was Your Girlfriend
Piano Medley
Nothing Compares 2 U
Take Me With U
Raspberry Beret
Come On
Baby, I'm A Star
1999
Towards the end Courtin' Time was added to the set.
