Really, when you think about it, isn't all fiction a form of lying?
Take any creative writing class, and you will be told to utilize your imagination and fill the pages with your creations.....then you will proceed to do writing exercises that will help you take your imaginary experiences and turn it into fiction.
Is that lying? When does fiction become lying?
How about when you claim that it was true!!! The new hot genre of the decade has been the memoir. It's so hot that authors are claiming their fiction as memoir even when they aren't memoirs. But if you think of it, and it's now in your memory, can you claim it as memoir?
I don't think so.
I believe that when you claim something to be memoir, it has to be at least based in some factual event. Even if it's only 50% factual and the rest is your creative license.
To what extremes will authors go to sell their novels? How about claiming that you escaped from the Nazis, was raised by wolves, and walked across Europe in search of your parents? Then, say, hypothetically, you discovered that the author completely made up the events.....in fact she isn't even Jewish??!!!!
You make the call! Fiction or lies?
